7. Mary Bethune Home
The home of Dr Mary McLeod Bethune is located on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University. Dr. Bethune founded the university in 1904, originally named the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute. The Bethune-Cookman University was born from Bethune’s belief that education was vital to racial advancement.
Besides being an educator, Bethune served as a special advisor to President Roosevelt on minority affairs. She created her own civil rights organization, the National Council of Negro Women. On display are historic items like furniture, her original library and various family heirlooms. Guided tours here provide an inspiring insight into Bethune’s legacy.
6. Daytona Beach International Speedway
Since it opened in 1959, the Daytona Beach International Speedway has played host to varied motorsports events. Just about every event from stock car and sports car races to go-karting and motorcycle races. It’s perhaps best known as home to NASCAR’s most iconic race, the Daytona 500.
