Part of the fun of family vacation is getting out and exploring the area. With a variety of ongoing summer events, there’s plenty to keep your brood busy while in Daytona Beach.
A museum tour of Lilian Place is a great way to spend some time (and sneak in a history lesson for the kiddos!). It was built in 1884 by one of the city’s early pioneers, Laurence Thompson, and is the oldest beachside home on Daytona Beach.
A beautiful example of Italianate High Victorian architecture, it boasts high ceilings, wood crown moldings, and heart-of-pine floors. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of Lucille, the mystery ghost of Lilian Place. The spirit of famed author Stephen Crane is also rumored to have been spotted on the premises. In 1896, Crane was brought to Lilian Place to recuperate after a boat he was aboard sank off Daytona Beach’s shoreline.
Tours are available Wednesdays through Mondays from 1 – 4 pm.
Find your center at the Museum of Arts and Sciences with their Yoga in the Gallery events each Wednesday. The session ($10 for non-members and $5 for members) takes place from 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm within the CiCi and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art.
Located on a 90-acre Florida nature preserve, the museum includes a new planetarium, restored railroad cars, and extensive collections representing decorative arts, Cuban art, and African art.
RSVP to the museum at (386) 255-0285 (Reservations are required). Bring a mat, towel, and water.
If your vacation falls within July 23 – July 24, check out the 20th Anniversary Halifax Summer Regatta. More than 600 rowers of all ages are expected to compete on the Halifax River. For more information, contact the Halifax Rowing Association at (386) 562-4081.
Outdoor summer concerts are always a hit – especially if they’re free. Enjoy music from varied tribute bands every Friday night at The Bandshell. Located in Oceanfront Park on the north end of the Boardwalk amusement area, the Bandshell has been a popular music venue since 1937. Get there early and peruse the Ocean Walk Shoppes, the Boardwalk, and the Pier.
Of course, here at the Plaza Resort & Spa families will find plenty to keep them busy, too. With everything from scavenger hunts and tie dye shirt making to contests and sing-alongs, opportunities to make family memories abound at Daytona Beach's Grand Resort.
